TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B
9th June 2024
Genesis 3:9-15; 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1; Mark 3:20-35.
In today’s gospel, the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem accused Jesus of casting our demons through the power of Beelzebul, the prince of devils. They made this accusation in denial of the spirit of God that was working through Jesus. Their jealousy and envy were obvious! In the first reading, Eve accused the serpent of tempting her in order to shield her desire for the forbidden fruit. Her fears and confusion were obvious! The decisions we make while denying the truth grieves the Holy Spirit thereby making repentance difficult. The denial cuts one off from the source of forgiveness and transformation, the Holy Spirit.
St. Paul made a distinction between the visible things that last only for a time, and the invisible things that are eternal. The reality of truth is eternal. The spirit helps us to accept the truth. We should strive not to allow our self-indulgence to inform our judgement like the scribes of the gospel and Eve in the first reading. Let us allow ourselves to experience the reality of truth. God, the source of all good things, will prompt us to discern what is right.
